On October the 26th 2007 I joined a group of 59 other motorcyclist from
all over the World on the “Riders for Health”
“Enduro Africa” tour. Enduro Africa is a motorcycle
tour through the Republic of South Africa to raise money
and provide motorcycles for local health charities. Full
details of Enduro Africa can be found at http://www.enduroafrica.com/home.htm. The aim of Riders for Health and
Enduro Africa is not just to raise money for the local
health charities however but to also provide motorcycles
so that the local health workers are able to travel to
patients and provide timely medical attention.
A lot of people helped me raise the money I need to go on this trip and I am extremely grateful to them all for giving me the opportunity to take part in such a great trip.
If anyone is interested in where we actually went I've produced a set of Google Earth route files (.kml) - there's one for each day. I've attached lots of pushpins with notes of things I can remember, things I can see from the GPS track and things I made a note of along the way.
On day 4 I've made a guess at an alternative route that some took - but I didn't do it so it's just a guess.
Much of the day 6 route is guessed from memory as my GPS played up that day and I only have bits of the route, I think it's pretty accurate but would welcome any corrections from others who were there.
For those who don't know
about Google Earth - Its a free download from;
Once installed
you go to File/Open and find the .kml files I've sent
here on your computer - you use the mouse to move about
the world and the scroll wheel to zoom in. If you really
want fun try selecting a Path for one of the days and
go to Tools/Play Tour and watch as you fly along the
route - very impressive and we can actually recognize
the roads and place we road along.
When you click on the links above the file will open in a new window - select File/Save Page As ... to download the file
Many thanks for everyone's support.

PS - I'm off to do Enduro Himalaya next August.

What
a FANTASTIC experience. I got my daughter, Emma, a day
at the Phil Price Rally School for her 18th Birthday
but shortly afterwards a big accident so it took us
a while to arrange the visit. When we eventually did
get there Emma had a fantastic time. While we were there
I took the opportunity to have a full speed ride around
a stage with Phil Price driving - bloody hell, what
a laxative - BRILLIANT!!!!!! Highly recommended for
a great day of both expert instruction and fun.
Meetings
are held every 1st and 3rd Monday in the month , regardless
of Bank Holidays, at The Tufthorn Inn at Milkwall Near
Coleford, Gloucestershire at 9:00 pm. Where is that?
If you are good with maps then have a look at www.multimap.com.
(You can zoom out to get your bearings!) Otherwise,
find Coleford then head out on the B4228 toward Chepstow
then left at lights on brow of hill and straight on
for half a mile into Milkwall and you will crash into
the Tufthorn when the road turns. Ask at the bar for
where we are and we will see you there.

MOD Ranges - the TRF advice
Unfortunately Landranger
160 (Brecon Beacons) shows an 'ORPA' (Other Route with
Public Access - which is OSese for Unclassified Road)
right over the middle of the Impact Area of the Sennybridge
Army Ranges. Having said that it does also say, over the
centre of said ORPA, 'DANGER AREA Observe Local
Signs' and 'Sennybridge Training Area'. There
are also prominent notices, alongside red flags/lights
on big poles, regarding the danger and making
it clear that proceeding past a hoisted red flag/light
is a criminal offence without proper
authority.
Now I have in the past
marked up Landranger 160 for a number of TRF members with
this particular ORPA hi-lited too. When I have done so,
I have also marked the Range Boundary and the Impact Area
Boundary and put something similar to the following notice
on the map too: "RED CROSSES MARK THE EDGE OF THE
IMPACT AREA!! DO NOT ENTER UNLESS RANGE STAFF
SAY IT IS SAFE TO DO SO! RED LINES MARK THE RANGE
BOUNDARY - DO NOT PASS IF RED FLAGS ARE FLYING, UNLESS
MY NOTES SAY OTHERWISE." (My notes will apply to
3 tarred roads, including the Upper Chapel to Garth and
Llywel to Tirabad roads, and 1 untarred road, through
the Halfway forest, saying that they are normally open).
Other than those few roads,
to the best of my knowledge (and previous experience)
the ONLY times that it is legally possible
the use any roads or Rights of Way in the Range Area,
without permission from the Army, is when the flags/lights
are lowered - which has only ever previously been the
10 day Xmas - New Year Range closure period.
